Day 3: Finse – Myrdal – Flam, biking Rallarvegen
Breakfast at the hotel. Hotel Check-out.
Continue the cycling trip along the railway construction road (Rallarvegen) to Myrdal and on to Flam. The trip follows a well-maintained gravel road through the Hardangervidda. Take your time to enjoy the fabulous scenery, and if you are lucky you might even spot wild reindeer in the area. You will pass by the Fagervatn Lake, which is the highest point of Rallarvegen at 1310m. The terrain is reasonably flat with some up and down between Finse and Myrdal (38km, 5 hours).
At Myrdal, you will take off towards Flam and follow the very steep downhill switchback path to the bottom of the Flam Valley. This section of Rallarvegen offers stunning views down the valley following the Flam Railway and allows you to plan a leisurely trip with lots of photo opportunities versus traveling by train. (15km, 1 hour)
Caution! – Rallarvegen is at times very steep, and the road is largely unsecured and demanding for children (recommended for 12 years older). The road is in relatively good shape, and not as steep as the Finse-Flåm route. On the way down the notorious 21 hairpin bends in the upper end of the Flam valley, dismount here, as there is a real danger of your brakes getting overheated and seizing up.
Upon arrival in Flåm, Drop off your bike at the bike depot (located between Fretheim Hotel and the Train Station). Walk to your hotel for check-in.
Dinner and accommodation at the Fretheim Hotel (B, D)
